I was given a short task to redesign the main screen and interactions for Commerzbank's banking app, focusing on enhancing user experience and streamlining workflows.
Objectives
The primary objective was to reimagine the user interface (UI) for the banking app, creating simplified workflows that would offer a more efficient and enjoyable banking experience. Given the increasing trend of mobile banking, the goal was to create an interface that provides just the right amount of information at any given time, catering to users who are on the move.
Research and Insights
To better understand user needs, I conducted user research with current digital banking customers. This involved interviews to gauge their thoughts and experiences with existing banking apps. I also spoke with the director of user insights at N26, gaining valuable perspectives on what makes a banking app successful in today’s market.
These conversations and additional desk research helped me identify the need for a lean banking experience that prioritises clarity and ease of use. Users expressed a preference for quick, goal-oriented interactions that allow them to access essential information without being overwhelmed by unnecessary features or data.
Approach
I began by deconstructing the existing interface, laying out the necessary elements and determining where they should be positioned for optimal usability. This process involved creating several iterations of the layout, each followed by light user testing to gather feedback and make informed design decisions.
From my research, it was clear that users wanted a straightforward experience, focusing on the tasks they needed to complete rather than exploring additional features. This insight drove my decision to create a lean interface, prioritizing essential information and interactions.
Interface Design
The redesigned interface features clear sections that users can easily navigate, with a strong emphasis on clarity and simplicity. I avoided overloading users with information and deliberately reduced any gamification or unnecessary elements that might distract from their primary goals.
The interface is balanced to ensure that users can quickly find what they need, whether checking their balance, making a payment, or viewing recent transactions. By focusing on goal-oriented design, the app now supports users in completing their tasks efficiently, minimising the time they need to spend within the app.
Outcome
The final result is a lean and highly usable banking app that delivers on-the-spot information with simple, intuitive interactions. Users can effortlessly explore their finances, supported by a design that prioritizes their needs and respects their time. The redesign has successfully created a streamlined banking experience that aligns with modern user expectations, providing a solid foundation for future enhancements.
